Huge hackathon begins on January 9th with a car as the grand prize

January 7, 2015 (CES 2015, Las Vegas): Mojio today announced that the company is powering the “Hack the Drive” hackathon taking place this weekend in San Francisco. Mojio partnered with leading German auto manufacturer to create an exclusive, proprietary connected car platform that will allow developers to create apps for cars with specific data.

“We are excited to partner with BMW as a leading innovator in the connected car space,” said Jay Giraud, CEO, Mojio. “Working with the team behind the scenes to power the platform on which hackers will develop their apps has been a watershed moment for Mojio.”

The event, which is now closed to new registrants due to popular demand, will see more than 400 developers meet in San Francisco to form teams and develop apps that address four key challenges:

• Use car data as never before and develop new disruptive ideas.
• Dive into CarSharing data to improve usability and vehicle management.
• Get access to charging data and explore ways to make EVs better and easier.
• Create new mobility services by leveraging car data to improve customer satisfaction.

Despite having only 28 hours to bring their ideas to life, the winners will be rewarded handsomely with $40,000 in prizes, including a grand prize of a brand new 2015 BMW i3. Other brands partnering for Hack the Drive include ZenDrive, SmartCar, Navdy, ChargePoint, MongoDB, Braintree, UserBlitz, HERE and Pivotal Labs.

Hack the Drive Update

Unlike the sponsors of the event, Mojio was selected from all of its competitors and surrounding solutions as the open technology platform provider for the event. 51 developer teams used Mojio’s connected car tools in combination with BMW i3 driving simulations and data. In just a single weekend, some amazing apps were built around the concepts of driver scoring, socialization and ride sharing.

Safe Speed won $5000 for 3rd place. Their app showed the speedometer changing color in response to changes in speed. This visual cue would be used to alert drivers of safer driving speeds based on real-time road and traffic conditions.

Cortex, which brought a unique approach to ride sharing, won $10,000 for 2nd place.

WeCharge won the Grand Prize of a brand new BMW i3 for their efforts. WeCharge allowed electric car drivers to book a charging spot in advance. One aspect that stuck out with their submission, was that when all the EV charging spots are full, the app user can message another EV car owner so they can remotely unlock the car in order to move it and access the charging station.
